Crimson Golferws to Meet Tough Dartmouth Today

The Crimson golfers will to for their 12th consecutive win this afternoon when they face a strong squad from Dartmouth at Concord Country Club.

The golf team has to win both this match and the one against Princeton next Saturday in order to go to the NCAA's this year.

Dartmouth, which has lost only one match this season, has a strong team with only three veterans in the line-up. Four slots are filled by sophomores who compiled an impressive 39-22 record last year. The talented sophomores have moved Big Green captain Barry Simpter, the number one golfer last year, down to the seventh position.

While Harvard has had an easy time winning most of its matches, the Dartmouth squad has been squeaking through with close victories. In their last three outings, the Indians beat strong Army, Amherst and UMass teams by 4-3 scores.

The Crimson and Big Green teams have both lost 15 individual matches this season, but the Harvard golfers have an edge in wins, recording 69 compared to Dartmouth's 27.

Crimson captain Bruce LoPucki places a 12-match winning streak on the line today. If he wins his match this afternoon and downs Mike Porter of Princeton Saturday, he will be the first Harvard golfer to go undefeated and win 14 matches in a season. He will also tie golf immortal Ted Cooney for most career wins with 30 victories.

The only sophomores on the Harvard team, Cooch Owen, is confident that Harvard will notch its 13th victory. "It's nice to see sophomores playing the game but I think we'll beat them 6-1," Owen said confidently.
