Martin L. Kilson, assistant professor of Government and Research Fellow in the Center for International Affairs, will receive tenure as a full professor of Government on July 1.
Kilson, who helped organize Social Sciences 5, "The Afro-American Experience," is currently a member of the Standing Committee on African Studies.
Travel in Africa
He traveled in West Africa in 1959-61 on a Ford Foundation fellowship, and in 1964-65 was a visiting professor at the University of Ghana. He has been a research associate in the Center for International Affairs since 1961, and was a lecturer in Government from 1963 until 1967, when he became an assistant professor of Government.
Published Works
He is the author of Political Change in a West African State (1966), a study of political development in Sierra Leone, and wrote, with Rupert Emerson. The Political Awakening of Africa (1965). His latest work, to be published soon as Chiefs, Peasants, and Politicians, explores grass-roots politics in Ghana.
After graduating from Lincoln University in 1953, Kilson received an M.A. from Harvard in 1958 and a Ph.D. in 1959.
His wife is a Research Fellow in African Ethnology at Harvard and a Scholar of the Radcliffe Institute.
