Ignacio, Dorwart Combine For Victory Over Jumbos

Harvard's varsity baseball team remained undefeated in the race for the Greater Boston League Championship with a 7-3 victory over Tufts yesterday at Soldiers' Field.

Captain John Ignacio and right-hander Bob Dorwart have had similar seasons and, fortunately for the Crimson, they both reached top form in the Crimson's fourth GBL win. A three-run homer down the left field line by Ignacio and the superb pitching of senior Dorwart provided the margin of victory.

Ignacio finished his season last year with an outstanding performance in the NCAA finals that raised his batting average to 284. But this season the senior left fielder got off to a terrible start on the Southern tour that left him hitting only .176 for the first eight games.

Yesterday, Ignacio's three-run blast in the third inning led the Crimson to an early 5-0 lead over the Jumbos. The line-drive home run kept Ignacio hitting over .600 for the last six games.

With a history almost parallel to Ignacio's, senior Dorwart finished last season in tremendous form with a 2-1 eleven inning loss to Southern Illinois in the NCAA World Series. Early this year however, Dorwart completed only one of his first four starts and his ERA soared to 3.26.

Flaw Corrected

During practice last week, the pitching staff corrected a flaw in Dorwart's motion toward the plate and the result has been two straight nine inning victories. In yesterday's game, the right-hander had control problems at the start and walked five batters, but he was never in serious trouble and was never hit hard after the fourth inning.

Beside the two seniors, the bottom half of the Crimson batting line-up combined for three important runs. They started the scoring in the second with two out when sophomore Bill Kelly doubled, second-baseman Bill Cherry singled him home, and catcher Jack Turco scored Cherry with another single. In the fourth, Kelly doubled once again, advanced on an infield hit by Cherry, and scored on Turco's sacrifice fly.

At 3 p.m. today the Crimson squad travels to Waltham to face Brandeis in another GBL match. Coach Loyal Park has picked sophomore J. C. Nickens to pitch against the Judges. Nickens began the season strong allowing only two runs in his first four games, but he was bombed for five scores while facing just seven batters at West Point last Saturday.

Freshmen stopped

It took a Harvard baseball team to stop this year's powerful Yardling squad. After averaging 11 runs in each of their first four games, the Freshmen lost their first game yesterday to the J.V., 8-3.
