After dropping into a tie for seventh place in the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League last Weekend, Harvard's varsity nine turns its attention to two important Greater Boston League games this week. The Crimson meets Tufts at 3 p.m. today on Soldiers Field and travels to Brandeis tomorrow to challenge the Judges.
Although Harvard's season record is only 7-6 and the team is 1-2 in the EIBL. Coach Loyal Park's squad is undefeated in the GBL with victories over B.U., B.C., and M.I.T. The Terriers are only a half game behind the league-leading Crimson's pace.
Crucial Games
The upcoming games are extremely important if Harvard hopes to win its tenth championship in seventeen years. Since B.U., 4-1, meets every team except Harvard twice, a single Crimson loss could eliminate Harvard from the title race.
This afternoon's starting pitcher will be senior Bob Dorwart. The right-hander pitched his first shutout and his second over Columbia. Allowing only four hits, he raised his record to 3-1 and lowered his earned run average to 2.52.
While not a leading contender, Tufts has its best club since it won the league title five years ago. Tufts has little trouble defeating Holy Cross, which beat Harvard 5-2 earlier in the year. Their season record is 7-4 and the Jumbos have split six matches in the GBL, including wins over Boston college and Northeastern.
Starting Shortstop
A Crucial factor in today's game will be whether short-shop Bob Cyboron can be in the starting line-up against the Crimson. An NCAA District I All-Star, Cyboron has been the team sparkplug all season.
Leading hurler on the Tufts team is Roy Borden, who is 3-0 for the season and has complied a 3.43 ERA. Heading the batting line-up are captain Gene Curletti with a .333 average and all-least center fielder Rich Glachetti hitting .325.
Brandeis traditionally has been the doormat of the Greater Boston League, but his year they are 2-2 for the season. In their last game, the judges edged Clark 4-3 behind the four-hit pitching of freshman Ed Weltman.
