Anil Nayar will be seeking his third straight Intercollegiate Squash Title and Harvard's top four players will try for another four-man championship during this weekend's Intercollegiates, which start today in New Heaven.
If Nayar wins this tournament, he will be the second person ever to capture three titles in a row. The first to do it was Steve Vehslage of Princeton eight years ago. "I think Anil's chances are excellent," said coach Jack Barnaby. "There's no doubt in my mind that he is one of the half-dozen best collegiate players of all time," he added.
Nayar's chief competitor will be teammate Larry Terrell, who was runner-up in last year's tournament. Both Nayar and Terrell are undefeated in college play this winter, and may very well end up as opponents in the finals again.
Competitors
The other two Crimson competitors are Fritz Hobbs and Fernando Gonzales. These two will be trying to duplicate the performance of Harvard's pair last year--Rick Sterne and Jose Gonzales, Fernando's cousin. Sterne and Gonzales came in third and fourth last winter.
Hobbs has been playing number three for Harvard since he regained eligibility in February, and he has yet to lose. Gonzales has been at the fifth spot most of the season, but beat Michel Scheinmann in a challenge match to earn the fourth position.
The top seeds behind Nayar and Terrell will probably be Penn's Spencer Burke and Navy's Bob Cowan. Others likely to be seeded high are George Alcorn of Army, Sandy McAdoo of Princeton. Bill St. John of Cornell, and Geoff Scott of Dartmouth. There are about 64 players entered in the tournament.
