Computer Center Extends Services

The IBM System 360/65 computer being installed at the Computing Center at 33 Oxford Street will extend direct use of the Center's facilities to the Business and Medical Schools.

The new third-generation computer is capable of controlling up to four simultaneous remote terminals, each with a card read-punch unit and a line-printer. The Center is installing one terminal at its office on 8 Mt. Auburn Street, and is negotiating for the installation of terminals at the Business and Medical Schools, according to Thomas L. Sexton, business manager of the Computing Center.

Because of the 360/65's enormous storage capacity and high speed, it will be able to compute on up to twenty programs simultaneously, decreasing the wait between program submittal and return, Sexton said.

A Computing Center newsletter says that the new computer is designed so that it can be expanded if necessary. Plans provide for the upgrading of the model 65 to the more powerful model 75 when increased use dictates. The new computer arrangement will be in operation on April 1, the newsletter says.
