Matmen Fall To Princeton

The varsity wrestlers suffered a disappointing loss to Princeton, 20-11, yesterday in the IAB and thus had to settle for a third-place finish in the Ivy League behind Penn and Princeton.

The meet was close throughout. A win by the Crimson's John Imrie at 177 brought his team within three points of the Tigers, 14-11, but two Harvard losses followed to settle matters.

Bruce Goodman was back at 123 yesterday after a week at 130, and he responded with a 16-3 decision over his opponent. Princeton's Al Uyeda evened the team score with an equally lopsided win over Tom Schnorr.

In another romp. Paul Catinella of Harvard downed 137-pounder Bob Todd. "It was Paul's best job all season," said coach John Lee, remembering one of the few happy moments of the afternoon.

Extreme Disappointment

Happiness was followed by extreme disappointment, however. Pat Coleman, one of the most consistent members of the Crimson team of late, saw his 4-1 lead turn into a loss in the final 30 seconds. Coleman was warned for stalling, and then lunged at his opponent to try to take him down. Jake Feldmeier pancaked Coleman and got four quick points to win, 5-4.

Princeton took the lead after the 152-pound bout when Mike Slutzker suffered an 8-6 setback in a hard-fought match. In another exciting duel, Mark Faller battled the Tigers' Ted Swisher to a 5-5 draw.

At this point, Harvard's dependable heavyweights usually supply the necessary victories. The wins did not materialize yesterday as three of the last four Crimson wrestler lost.

Previously undefeated captain Howie Chatterton dropped a close decision to talented sophomore Tom Potts, 7-6, and Harvard trailed by six. Imrie postponed the sad ending with an 8-3 triumph over his opponent at 177. "John did a really good job," Lee said after the meet.

Howie Freedman, needing a win at 191 to keep Harvard alive, fought to a 2-2 tie through two periods. Freedman has been out for several weeks due to an injury, however, and his conditioning yesterday was not what it used to be. Princeton's Thompson dominated the third period and earned a 10-5 decision to clinch victory for his team.

Hooked in a Cradle

In an evenly-matched unlimited bout, Tom Tripp of Harvard lost 8-5 when he was hooked in a cradle by Charlie Dressel. It was only Tripp's third defeat of the season.

The wrestlers, who concluded the season with a 4-2 Ivy record, will now prepare for the Eastern Championships March 14 and 15 at Princeton.
