8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports

Varsity Swimmers Romp Over Pennsylvania, 66-46

By Bennet H. Beach

The varsity swimming team assured itself of a 500 season record in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League, and sophomore Mike Cahalan set a record in the 50-yard freestyle as the Crimson whipped the University of Pennsylvania, 66-46, Saturday in Philadelphia.

The meet was not as close as the score indicates because Harvard earned an early lead and, with the help of three sweeps in the middle of the meet, very promptly put the victory out of Penn's reach.

Penn sophomore Steve Kowal was the only double winner, capturing firsts in the freestyle events at 100 and 200 yards, both in superb times. Kowal beat Cahalan in the 100 in 47.5 a victory by 2.0 seconds, and downed Toby Gerhart in the 200.

Harvard's sensation Steve Krause swam a very strong race in the 1000-free, turning in a fast time of 10:27 for an easy win over Penn's Craig Delmore. A few moments later, Cahalan broke the record in the 50-free with a 21.8 clocking to better the 7-year-old mark by 0.1 seconds.

With the score 22-12, Dave Powlison won the individual medley to start the Crimson towards its three consecutive sweeps. John Bragg was second. Divers Bill Murphy and Dick Eisenberg combined for another of their many sweeps by easily outpointing Penn's Amos Koons in the one-meter dive. Johnnie Munk and captain Martie Chalfie finished 1-2 in the butterfly to put Harvard ahead, 46-15.

Other winners for the Crimson were John Burris in the backstroke and Steve Baumgart in the breaststroke. The closest event was the three-meter dive.
