Radcliffe will increase its night watchman force and reactivate a police alarm system as part of an effort to tighten security in the dormitories, J. Boyd Britton, administrative vice president of Radcliffe said yesterday.

No changes in security measures for the eight off-campus houses have been planned, he said.

Alarm button will be installed on bells desks in the brick dormitories. They will ring in the resident's apartment and turn on a blue light over the outside doors to summon police. The lights were used until five or six years ago, Britton said, but were activated from the residents' apartments.

The University Police, who presently only patrol the grounds, will check bells desks in the large brick dormitories "on a random basis during the night," he said.

Britton declined to state how many night watchmen will be added to the existing three-man force.

Buzzer Locks

Buzzer locks--the system by which an outside door can be opened only if someone inside rings a buzzer--are being considered, Britton said.

Buildings and Grounds men and other permanent Radcliffe employees will soon receive embossed identification badges, Britton said. Private workmen will be given temporary identification and head residents will be notified in advance when they are coming.

Locks on individual room doors are being installed in all the dormitories.
