Stickmen Gurry, Cavanagh Chosen ECAC All - Stars

Harvard sophomore center Joe Cavanagh and Cornell senior goalie Ken Dryden were unanimous first-team choices for the ECAC Hockey Tournament all-star team announced today following last weekend's tourney at the Garden.

Boston University forward Herb Wakabayashi and Harvard defenseman Chris Gurry were also selected, but tourney champion Cornell dominated the vote as three members were chosen to the first six. Besides Dryden, Big Red co-captains Brian Cornell, a wing, and Bruce Pattison, a defenseman, were named.

Gurry, of Andover, and Cavanagh, of Cranston, R.I., were the only Americans selected--the other four being Canadians.

B.U. placed three men on the second team: Jim McCann, defenseman Bill Hinch and wing Eddie Wright. Also picked were Harvard defenseman Terry Flaman. Cornell wing Kevin Pettit, and Clarkson wing Tom Deacon.

Gene Kinasewich, assistant coach, said Cavanagh possessed a unique hockey sense, not usually fostered by high school rules and play in the United States. There should be no question about Cavanagh, Harvard's leading scorer, being All-Ivy, Kinasewich said.

Kinasewich praised Chris Gurry, Harvard's second member of the ECAC all-stars, for hard checking on defense and his great ability to pick up the puck and rush out of his zone. He is very offense-conscious and has a tremendous lateral motion, Kinasewich said.
