Peterson Delays Stipend Meeting

As a result of the Student Faculty Advisory Council resolution passed last Tuesday, the Committee on Admissions and Scholarships canceled its meeting scheduled for last Wednesday concerning the stipends of students on probation.

The SFAC resolution asked the Committee on Admissions and Scholarships to delay consideration of the stipends of students on probation until an SFAC subcommittee can complete a study of probation's relation to financial aid.

Chase N. Peterson '52, dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, said yesterday that since the Faculty's January 14 decision on Paine Hall the Committee has "suspended action on everybody," and has not reduced stipends of any students placed on probation.

He explained that "the issue of 'selective action' was forever laid to rest' when the Hoffmann resolution, asking exemption of stipend reductions for only Paine Hall demonstrators, was tabled at the last Faculty meeting on February 11.

Big Issue

Now the issue is whether the Committee will reduce stipends for all students on probation, or will suggest that the Faculty change its policy and exempt all students on probation from stipend reductions.

Peterson said that his committee would help the SFAC subcommittee in its study. He added that the Committee will reconsider stipend reduction on March 12.

There will be pressure on the SFAC subcommittee to draft a resolution on probation's relation to stipends in time for the next SFAC meeting on March 11--the day before the Committee will meet to reconsider stipend reductions.

Bruce Chalmers, Master of Winthrop House, who chaired the last SFAC meeting, said yesterday that he will be "a little disappointed" if the SFAC subcommittee does not "have something ready" on March 11. Chalmers explained that the SFAC subcommittee is "not intended to be a long drawn out committee inquiry."
