Crimson Skaters End Season Play; Favorite to Repeat Win Over Elis

By Stephen F. Kelley

Harvard's hockey team will try to get back on the winning track tonight as it takes the ice in the final regular season game of the year against Yale at New Haven.

The Crimson, having already clinched second place in the Ivy League, will be tuning up against a weak Eli six for the first round of the ECAC tournament, beginning Tuesday at Watson Rink.

Last Saturday night, Harvard rolled to an easy 7-2, victory over the same Yale team at the Boston Arena. The Elis have muddled through a dismal season so far, finishing in the Ivy second division. Tonight they have nothing to lose, and will be going all out to pull an upset.

The Crimson, on the other hand, may be looking past tonight's encounter toward Tuesday's confrontation with the University of New Hampshire. Harvard, seeded second in the ECAC's, will be trying to rebound from Thursday's loss to Cornell, the Ivy Champions and top seed in the tournament.

Coach Cooney Weiland will have to find a way to bolster his defensive alighment, which has been weakened by the loss of sophomore Terry Driscoll for academic reasons.

Against Cornell, Weiland moved Skip Freeman into the line-up alongside Chris Gurry, and paired Terry Flamen with Dave Jones. These groups were beaten frequently by the Big Red skaters, and Weiland may do some experimenting to find a more effective combination.

Spark Attack

Offensively, the sophomore line of Joe Cavanagh, Dan DeMichele, and Steve Owen continues to spark the Crimson attack. The line accounted for the first two goals against Cornell, with DeMichele getting the first and Owen the second. Cavanagh directed the potent charge, though Cornell held him scoreless--the first team to do that this year.
