Varsity Squashmen Will Encounter An Upset-Minded Williams Squad

The varsity squash team will seek to hold off an upset minded Williams squad at Hemenway gymnasium this afternoon at 2 p.m. Earlier in the season Williams startled the squash world by pulling off a remarkable 5-4 upset of a highly touted Penn team at Williamstown. In that match Williams took each of the top five matches, while Penn's superior strength down below prevailed.

The glory was short-lived, however, as they bowed to a punchless M.I.T. squad at M.I.T. in early January. Shortly thereafter, Princeton's Tigers romped over Williams by a score of 8-1 at Princeton.

The inconsistency of Williams' performances testifies to the tremendous advantage of the home court in squash. The temperatures vary considerably from court to court, and to a large extent dictate the style of play. In a hot court the ball bounces higher; thus drop shots are less effective and the points tend to be longer. With Harvard playing away matches at Navy, Penn, and Princeton, coach Jack Barnaby has been drilling the team on long points with emphasis on stamina rather than finesse.

Harvard's difficult away schedule adds importance to the score of the Williams match. In the event of a tie for the national championship the title will be decided on the basis of scores against common opponents. Consequently Harvard is shooting today not only for a victory, but for a decisive victory.

Going into today's match Harvard's lineup has been re-arranged slightly. Nayar and Terrell remain at 1 and 2 respectively, but the return of Olympian oarsman Fritz Hobbs moves Michel Scheinmann down to four. In addition, Fernando Gonzalez has moved ahead of John Ince to the number 5 position and Ed Atwood has jumped ahead of Peter Abrams to the number seven spot. Saeve Whitman and Jaime Gonzales remain at nine and ten respectively.
