Harvard Five Faces Yale Under IAB Roof Tonight

By Richard D. Paisner

The Harvard basketball team--hoping that injured captain Bob Kanuth may see some spot action--hosts Ivy League foe Yale tonight at 8 p.m. at the IAB. Neither team has set the League on fire and if Harvard can improve its shooting. Crimson supporters, who were out in force last weekend, may have a happy night.

Yale has one potential superstar, a 5'11" sophomore named Jim Morgan. He broke most of the Eli freshman records and has been scoring about 20 points a game.

Junior John Whitson, 6'9", has profited from Morgan's play. A year ago, the center averaged about 7 points but now he's close to 14 and credits Morgan's playmaking as a major factor.

Last Second

As a team, Yale has a 6-11 record overall, the last two losses last weekend to Columbia, 69-48, and to Cornell 65-64. Against the Big Red, Morgan and captain Thatcher Shellaby overcame a five point lead with less than a minute to go only to lose on a last second mid-court shot.

Harvard has suffered from a number of basic problems, especially with Barth Royer and Bobby Johnson, two experienced forwards, out for the season, and with Kanuth hobbled by a series of misfortunes. Penn's guards showed up defensive lapses in Harvard's backcourt men last Saturday and in both games (including Princeton the night before), Harvard made less than 40 per cent of its shots.

10th Place

While sophomore Dale Dover has established himself as one of the League's best drivers, he has not shot well from the outside and, with his proclivity for committing offensive fouls, Dover often finds himself sitting on the bench, leaving the offense to Chris Gallagher and, occasionally Eric Gustavson. If Gallagher, who is playing the best basketball of his career scores 32 points against Yale and Brown (Saturday night also at the IAB), he will move into 10th place on the all-time Harvard scoring list.
