The Harvard wrestlers received a severe blow to their Ivy Championship hopes when they barely lost, 17-14, to league-leading Penn at the IAB Saturday.
With the 191 and unlimited matches still to be fought. Harvard had drawn to within six points of the Quakers and needed only two wins for a meet tie.
John Imrie, the 191-pounder, just missed giving Harvard one of those wins. Imrie went ahead by two points in the final period of his match, but Penn's Dave Pottruck earned two points for riding time and tied the match. The tie made a Harvard victory impossible, and Tom Tripp's win in the unlimited class only tightened the score.
Penn exploded for an early 12-3 lead in the lower weight classes. Pat Coleman earned the Crimson its only three points, winning the 145-pound class by decision.
Harvard's heavyweights, Mark Faller and undefeated Howie chatterton brought the Crimson to within three points of Penn with victories in the 160 and 167-pound weights. But 177-pounder Rayner lost his match, and, coupled with Imrie's hard-luck tie, this ended Harvard's chance for victory.
