Cliffies Display Good Swim Form, Placing Second in Regional Meet

By Buster Crabbe

Radcliffe took second place and broke two regional records in last Saturday's New England Intercollegiate Swim Meet at Springfield.

Fourteen schools participated in the meet which Springfield College won with a final tally of 58. Radcliffe earned 49 points, and Southern Connecticut came in third with 42.

A sore spot on the Radcliffe team has been the lack of any divers, and this deficiency cost the 'Cliffe the meet. The 3-meter diving competition was swept by Springfield College, which also took first and third on the 1-meter board.

Radcliffe recovered from this slow start brilliantly by placing first in the 200-yd. Medley Relay, with a time of 2:08.80. The team, composed of Eleanor Hobbs '69, Julie Anderson '71, Laurie Oliver '71, and Kathy Fletcher '71, broke the old New England record of 2:16.80.

Denise Nadeau '72 collected a third place in the 200-yd. freestyle, Fletcher took fifth in the 50-yd. free, Hobbs placed fourth in the 50-yd. backstroke, Anderson took third in the 50-yd. breaststroke, and Oliver earned a fifth in the 50-yd. fly.

Radcliffe was running second in the meet when the 100-yd. events began, but fell to third, and then to fifth place as the only points received for these events were Nadeau's fifth in the 100-yd. free and Anderson's third in the 100-yd. breast.

However, there remained time for one more coup, and the 'Cliffe team achieved it in taking another relay first, this time in the 200-yd. freestyle relay. With Hobbs, Fletcher, Dorothy Horns '72, and Oliver racing to a finish in 1:56.42, the team broke another New England record and reinstated Radcliffe as second in the meet.

The team, home again from Springfield's Art Linkletter Natatorium, is continuing to keep in shape for the Mt. Holyoke meet here Feb. 22. The Radcliffe relay teams will also enter the Women's Intercollegiates in Philadelphia on March 8.
