Boston's worst snow storm in twenty years did not stop 10,000 fans from coming to see the Harvard hockey team defeat B.U., 5-3, last night at Boston Garden and subsequently win its first Beanpot championship in seven years. Harvard performed its best overall team effort of the season while sophomore Joey Cavanagh was picked the most valuable player of the tournament.
Harvard's famous sophomore line of DeMichele-Cavanagh-Owen accounted for three goals, however two goals within a minute of each other in the third period by juniors Ron Mark and George McManama were the ones which brought Harvard from a 3-2 deficit and eventually won the game.
The defense, too, was playing its finest as juniors Chris Gurry and Terry Flamen paired up in blocking shots and clearing the puck at several key moments. Flamen, playing only his second game of the season after sitting out the first semester was at top speed despite a shoulder injury. Sophomore goalie Bruce Durno made 22 saves, some on the spectacular side, in keeping high scoring B.U. to three goals.
The first period started fast with Harvard getting a quick jump at 2:57 when sophomore Joey Cavanagh picked up a Dan DeMichele pass, skated in and netted the puck from 10 feet. A Harvard penalty at 7:03 gave B.U. an advantage but a great defensive effort by Harvard combined by several spectacular saves by Bruce Durno averted any score. The rest of the period saw more fine defensive play by both teams preclude any further score.
B.U. scored quickly in the second period on a screened slap shot by captain Billy Hinch from about fifteen feet. Both teams moved to the defensive upon successive penalties and there was no score until 8:10 when DeMichele and Cavanagh again teamed up to put Harvard into the lead. This time DeMichele passed from behind the goal to Cavanagh who promptly shot the puck home as goalie Jim McCann stood watching. The teams then moved back to defense until the end of the period when suddenly Harvard came to life and only spectacular saves by McCann averted any score as B.U. ended the period short-handed.
The final period started slowly as both teams skated back and forth until, at 7:17, B.U. forward Bruce Hatton tied the game at 2-2 on a shot over Durno who was down after making a save. B.U. wasted no time taking the lead when less than a minute later, all-American center Herb Wakabayashi skated in alone on Bruce Durno and beat him for the score.
Harvard, down for the first time in the evening, stayed that way for thirty seconds when Ron Mark took a Terry Flamen pass, skated around a B.U. defenseman and beat McCann for the score. To finish out the wild two minutes which produced four goals, George McManama gave Harvard the lead which it never relinquished when he and Captain Bobby Bauer teamed up on a B.U. defenseman, with a set up pass to McManama who put it in for the score.
B.U. pulled its goalie in the last minute of the game in an attempt to put the game into overtime, however they got no shots on Durno and Cavanagh closed the scoring on an open goal shot with three seconds remaining in the game.
