Thanks to a contracted mind and an expanded stomach, Richard T. Tarnas 72 Chewed up the competition along with 171/2 pancakes to win the Quincy House Pancake-Eating Championship.

With 50 fans cheering him on, Tarnas held off a late rally by Richard J. Baton 72 to eke out a half-pancake victory yesterday in the House dining hall.

Bennett H. Beach 71, a heavy favorite in pre-contest betting, finished a disappointing last among the four contestants-barely forcing down nine of the 7 pancakes.

Trainer David R. Bishop 72 attributed Tarnas's victory to his rigid two-week training program.

"We had Rick on a tough schedule-smoking grass every day and never going to bed before 4 a.m.," said Bishop. "Then the stoned Munchies-brought on by two pre-contest joints-floated my man to victory," he added.
