CCNY Edges Fencing Squad, 15-12; Reitz Has Best Crimson Showing

By Martin R. Garay

Larry Cetrulo and Paul Viita competed in their first match for the varsity fencing team Saturday afternoon, but were unable to produce enough winning bouts for a victory. as the Crimson lost, 15-12, to CCNY in New York.

Cetrulo, opening the match for Harvard, was nervous and somewhat pale. He dropped the first bout, but settled down and came back to post two convincing victories in the saber.

The Crimson epee crew did well once again, but Paul Viita, who was expected to win at least a bout, lost his first two bouts, 5-4, and was replaced by Eliot Horwitiz, who also lost.

John Reitz, who continues to improve with each match, gave the Crimson its most convincing performance, winning all three of his epee bouts. Fencing at the number two epee behind Reitz, Mark Irvings won two of his bouts and ended the dual meet with an exciting come-from-behind victory.

Along with Cetrulo at saber. Richard Tolbert won two of his bouts and lost the third. 5-4.

Sophomore Pat Pugliese lost the first two bouts at the number three saber. His replacement for the third bout. Scott Beckett, also lost. The Crimson, therefore, did not post any victories at the number three position, losing nine bouts. If Harvard hopes to do well against Ivy competition, it will have to find at least an occasional winner for those positions.

Cliff Ruderman won two foil matches, and lost the third, 5-4. He almost dropped a second, when he lost his concentration after running up a 4-0 lead. The CCNY fencer tied the score, but Ruderman snapped back to gain the final point.

Art Weismann, the number two foil, won his first match, but lost his touch and failed to win again. Phil Rappaport could not overcome his nervousness, as he failed to get the final point, and lost his three bouts, 5-4.
