Cetrulo Returns to Lineup Today As Fencers Duel Powerful CCNY

By Martin R. Garay

When the fencing team takes on CCNY this afternoon in New York. last year's Crimson victory could provide the psychological advantage for success again today.

"We beat CCNY 17-10 last year and in fencing, a sport of psychology, this could be an advantage," coach Edo Marion said yesterday. "I'm confident we will win by a close margin, 15-12 perhaps," With an overwhelming victory against SMU last week. Marion has good reason to be confident.

The Beavers opened their season last week with a 17-19 victory over Yale. In last year's match. CCNY overran the Bull dogs, 18-9.

After missing the first match. Larry Cetrulo will be back at saber. The number one saber, he is expected to win all three of his bouts. Richard Tolbert and Patri Pugliese, while they both had good days against SMU, should have some trouble at the other two saber positions Scott Beckett will be the backup.

"Cliff Ruderman oscillates between very fast and not enough." coach Marion said. "If he is fast, he'll win all three of his foil bouts." Phil Rappaport and Art Weismann both have experience, and will start at the other two foil positions.

The epee, the Crimson's strong point, will be stronger with the addition of Paul Viita, John Reitz and Mark Irvings, who both won three bouts against SMU will join Viita, who missed last week's match, at epee.

Although coach Marion is confident that his team will beat the Beavers, there could be some cause for concern. The Crimson does not have eight sure points as it did last year. Tom Keller Geza Tetrayllay and Ron Winfield, who are ali gone, won eight out of nine matches against CCNY then. The sophomores replacing them lack their experience.

"We should get better as the season progresses." Marion said. If his sophomores can pick up those eight missing points. Marion's prediction could be considered an understatement.
