Harvard Wrestlers Roll by Bruins To Capture Second Straight Match

Harvard's varsity wrestling team, led by junior Mark Fuller, won six out of its last seven matches last night to defeat Brown, 27-13.

Fuller (167) paced the Crimson onslaught by defeating the Bruins' Dave Beemer on a default after 33 seconds of the second period. The match had been stopped twice because of injuries to Beemer and it was finally decided that he could no longer continue.

Beemer had defeated Fuller two years ago in the finals of the freshman Eastern championships on a referee's split decision. It was their first meeting since that confrontation.

Abbott Disappoints

A major disappointment in the Harvard victory was Jim Abbott's (unlimited) loss to Brown's Frank Walsh on a pin. "I was a little upset over that loss." Harvard coach John Lee said after the match. "If he'd lose ten pounds, he'd be much better off"

Tom Schnorr (118) won his match by forfeit but sophomore Jay Galeski (126) was beaten decisively by Serge Brunner, 14-0. Senior Bill Wasserstrom (134) was pinned at 3:19 of his match, and Harvard tell behind 8-5.

The Crimson bounced back to win the next six matches and clinch the victory. Captain Paul Catinella (142) decision Ron Delo, 3-2, in one of the toughest bouts of the evening.

Junior Pat Coleman (150) pinned Mark Older at 2:37, and Collin Mangrum (158) defeated Barry Nathan, 5-0, in a lopsided decision.

Rayner Impressive

Junior Tony Rayner (177) was impressive in a 5-2 decision over Steve Batty, and Dave Scanlon's (190) 9-3 victory over Lon Shepp ended the scoring for Harvard.

"We're pretty happy with the results tonight." Lee confessed after the victory "Brown and Wesleyan are comparable teams and we're pleased to win by this margin." The Crimson matmen edged Wesleyan last Saturday at Wesleyan, 18-16.

Freshman Feats

The freshman grapplers unseated a highly-touted Brown freshman team, 27-11. The Crimson did surprisingly well in the lower classes, and Jonathan Peters (142) pinned his opponent in the last three seconds of the match. "They thought they had a good team but we waxed them," Lee said.
