Yardling Booters Wallop Yale, 4-0

Harvard's Yardling soccer team closed out the 1969 season with a steady 4-0 victory over the Yale freshmen yesterday afternoon in New Haven, but the Crimson JV suffered its third consecutive tie to finish the year with a disappointing 3-1-4 record.

A blustery wind, freezing temperatures, and a rough field hampered the Yardling booters, but four goals by Chris Papagianis and a diving third quarter save by goalie Peter. Asehaffenburg sparked the Crimson to its ninth victory against a single defeat.

Tied by Princeton and Brown in its last two outings the JV was again frustrated by a baffling inability to score, and coach Seamus Maltin's charges were left empty-handed against a clearly inferior Yale squad.

Getchell Pleased With Win

"I'm pleased for the team, because they couldn't play their game out there to lay. Whenever you go 9-1, it's got to be a good season." Yardling coach Dana Getchnell said after his team's victory.

Papagianis registered his first goal after only six minutes of play when, with his back to the goal, he headed a long through pass from Bobby Smith over the Yale goalie and into the net.

Ron Padmore again fed Papagianis nine minutes deep into the second period and the slick Yardling center forward powered the ball past the off-balance Bulldog goal keeper.

With Harvard guarding a slim 2-0 lead early in third quarter. Yale got a penalty shot inside the Crimson goal area. Asehaffenburg stayed off the threat, however, as he dove far to his right and gathered in a hard shot near the post.

That gave us quite a lift and it kept us in the ball game. "Getchell said after Asehaffenburg, who allowed only four goals in ten games, had recorded his fifth shutout of the season.

Papagianis responded to Asehaffenburg's heroics with his third goal minutes later on an assist from center half Emmanuel Ekama. Midway through the final period. Papagianis banged home his 24th goal of the year after a through pass from Mossavar-Rahmani.

The Yardling's 55-goal season output breaks the freshman scoring record of 50 goals set by last year's 10-0 team. At the same time, the Crimson defense allowed a meager five goals, second only to the four-goal season record held by Bill Meyers 1967 team.
