Kirkland Clinches Football Crown; Winthrop Stops Eliot House, 12-6

The Kirkland House defensive unit staved off a determined offensive march by Dunster House in the closing minutes of their game last Monday to capture the intramural tackle football championship with a 14-8 win.

Kirkland, which finished with a 6-0 record, scored first on a long pass from southpaw quarterback Pete Bernhard to Dave Lambrix. Another pass- Beruhard to end Randy Enger- for a two-point conversion gave Kirkland an 8-0 lead.

Dunster tied the game with a 65-yard dash by Kenny Thomas and a two-point conversion run by fullback Billy Mahoney. The Dunster defense stiffened, forcing Kirkland into a fourth down and five situation. But the Kirkland kicker faked the punt and completed a pass to Quincy Shaw for a 40-yard gain.

Kirkland Makes It

Bernhard connected with Lambrix again for another touchdown, and Kirkland led 14-8.

With five minutes to go in the game. Dunster's Thomas intercepted an errant Kirkland pass and put his team in scoring position on the Kirkland 25-yard line. Dunster moved to the three-yard line on fullback dives by Mahoney, but Kirkland defensive line held to preserve its undefeated season.

In another game. Winthrop took over sole possession of second place by defeating Eliot House, 12-6 Leverett moved at will against Lowell to win 20-0 Adams House halfback Franny Saba scored 14 of his team's points in its 20-8 victory over Quincy.

Winthrop Winners

Winthrop House dominated play in the first half and led 12-0 at half-time. Flanker Jimmy Peterson scored the first touchdown on an overload power play. Winthrop capitalized on an Eliot House fumble in the second quarter, scoring on a five-yard plunge by halfback Billy Hobbs.

Eliot stormed back in the second half. Quarterback Bill Cherry hit Art Serrano on a 50-yard pass play to score. Winthrop fumbled a punt snap. Eliot recovered on the Winthrop 20 and moved to the six-yard line, but Winthrop's defense, which has yielded only 12 points all year, stopped the threat. Eliot finished the season with a 4-2 record.

Bunnies Do It Right

Leverett House evened its record at 3-3 by scoring three touchdowns and a safety against a weak Lowell team. The only thing that Leverett's Bunnies didn't do was score on their conversion attempts.

"Anything worked." said quarterback Steve Mannion. "We swept easily, and would have scored three more touchdowns if the passing hadn't been so lousy," he added.

Adams Victorious

Adams House rolled past Quincy to finish its season with a 2-4 record. Saba gave his team an early lead with an eight-yard run. Quincy tied the game on a 60-yard pass play. But Saba fell on a blocked punt in the end zone to put Adams back in the lead.

Quarterback Larry Cetrulo hit Pat Pankhurst with a 40-yard pass to complete the scoring. Quincy ended its season without a win, 0-5-1.
