Zbrzeznj, Beier Out for Season

By Bennett H. Beach

The entire Holy Cross football team has hepatitis, and Crimson coach John Yovicsin is quickly trying to find replacements for the starters he lost in the game with Boston University. But other college teams are faced with similar problems this week.

Penn was hard hit by injuries in its game Saturday, but there was cause for optimism because the third quarterback filled in well. Bernie Zbrzeznj was in the Brown game for only three plays before leaving the field with a total separation of his right shoulder. He will probably miss the entire season after being the second leading passer in the league as a junior.

Behind him were two sophomores, and coach Bob Odell sent in Mike Hickok. Early in the second quarter, Hickok departed after his left shoulder was separated. Odell had to send in Phil Procace, who alternated with Hickok as last year's freshman quarterback.

Procace completed seven of 11 passes for 135 yards and gained 68 yards on nine carries. He accounted for 203 of his season's 270 yards of total offense in a 23-2 win. But Procace usually plays as a defensive back, and there is some question whether he can continue to perform so well.

Duplicates Feat

Holy Cross nearly duplicated its feat of a year ago while playing Dartmouth last weekend. On the final play of the Holy Cross-Dartmough game in 1968, Bob Mlaker broke his leg. He survived last Saturday's game, but dependable halfback Clark Beter did not. He is likely to miss the rest of the season because of a dislocated right elbow.

John Short, a junior who led the freshman team in rushing two years ago, has taken over Beter's position. But Beter was the Indians' leading ground gainer last fall, and coach Bob Blackman was convinced he would be All-Ivy this year.

Blackman feels that everyone will work a little harder to make up for the loss of Beter.
