Forty-one of 47 freshman proctors have signed a statement presented yesterday to F. Skiddy von Stade '38, dean of Freshmen, which calls for the abolition of parietals.
Roger D. Thomas, teaching fellow in General Education and one of the statement's originators, said parietals are an anachronism and added that he was "very concerned about the hypocrisy of keeping a rule that is largely disregarded."
Parietals Proposal
The Committee on Houses, of which von Stode is a member, will consider today a second proposal by three undergraduates giving individual Houses and the Freshman Council the power to regulate parietals.
One of the three, John Hanify '70 president of HUC, said that "this will essentially mean the abolition of parietals."
Working with Hanify are two members of the Freshman Council. Bucky Bagot '73 and Henry Baig '73, who will present a petition to the committee signed by 1000 of their 1200 classmates calling for the end of all parietals.
Hanify said the three will not ask for the direct abolition of parietals because the Committee "can refuse to abolish
parietals, but by denying the Houses and the Freshman class the right to decide their own social regulations they also deny the intent of the Fainsod Report."
Von Stade said he doubted whether the Committee would act on the group's request, since Faculty approval of the Fainsod Report would replace the Committee on the Houses with the Committee on Houses and Undergraduate Life, which would include students.
Von Stade added that debate over any major policy changes should occur after the faculty decision. The present Committee on Houses, he said, probably could not make such a major policy change without Faculty approval.
Following Proctors Lead
Von Stade said he will follow the recommendation of the proctors and "move that freshman parietals be equated with present upper class parietals."
Freshman parietals now run from 2 p. m. to 7 p. m. on weekdays, from noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday. and from noon to 8 p. m. on Sunday. However. upper class parietals run from noon to midnight Sunday through Thursday. and until 1 a. m. on Friday and Saturday.
Von Stade, a member of the Administrative Board, said no student has been punished yet this year for a violation of parietals.
