Colburn Leads Field Harriers Top Area Competition In Sixth Straight GBC Victory

As expected, the cross country team coasted to its sixth consecutive Greater Boston Colleges championship yesterday at Franklin Park, sweeping the first four places and taking six of the top ten spots.

Captain Kelth Colburn. John Heyburn. Dave Pottetti, and Mike Koerner were running together at the two-mile mark 50 yards ahead of their nearest competitor. They stretched this lead, and then Colburn moved out to eventually win by to 16 seconds in 24:03 Koerner, Pottetti and Heyburn followed in that order.

Heyburn was clocked in 24:39, beating Northeastern's Mike Scanion, the fifth man, by about 200 yards. Harvard's Erik Roth and Howie Foye ran well, finishing eighth and ninth, and Charlie McCormack was seventeenth.

Northeastern, which collected 54 points to finish second to the Crimson's 18 points, was expected to pose more of a threat. It would have been closer if Larry Joseph had run for the Huskies, but he was reportedly resting for an important meet Friday against Dartmouth.

Two in a Row

It was Colburn's second win in a row. He earned his first victory of the season Friday at Dartmouth when he broke the course record. Harvard ran without Roy Shaw and Tom Spengier. Shaw will be running Friday in the Big Three meet at New Haven, but Spengler will be out longer Sophomore Bob Seals is still not in top shape due to recent hip and knee injuries.

The freshmen did equally well though a Yardling failed to place first Captain Tom New was running with Northeastern's Tony Frontierro in the lead until with about half a mile to go. Frontierro started a kick which New could not match beating him by five second.

Improving Freshmen

Close behind New were Marshall Jones, George Barker and Mary Connelly, all of Harvard. Dave Elliou, recovering quickly after being sidelined with a seriously sprained ankie, finished a strong seventh overell Jeff Brokaw also continued to show improvement, finishing twelfth.

The freshman score was even more lopsided than the varsity one. The Crimson needed 21 points, while Northeastern earned 64, and Boston University 95.

The Yardlings were without the services of John Qairk who has won every race he's entered ?hu? far. He has a ??? painful achilles tendon.
