Freshman Union May Open Doors For Coed Eating

Cliffies may be allowed into the Freshman Union for weekday lunches during March, under a program proposed by the Harvard Freshman Council.

The program, called Experimental Co-educational Month, will be officially proposed to the Committee on Houses in a report to be prepared by William H. Guenther '72, chairman of the Freshman Council's Student - Administration Relations Committee.

The Union would probably be opened to all Radcliffe Students at first, Guenther said. If this caused overcrowding, "the best thing would be to open the Union to a certain number of girls and open the House dining rooms also," he added.

Practicality

Guenther said that his report, to be presented in early February, would attempt to draw up a practical plan for coed dining which would not cause overcrowding or financial loss at either Harvard or Radcliffe. "The most important difficulty is whether Radcliffe can sustain the financial difficulties," he said.

If enough girls eat in Harvard dining halls, Guenther said, Radcliffe could solve the financial problems by closing one of the two Radcliffe dining halls which currently serve lunch.

"This is the first sensible plan I've seen," F. Skiddy von Stade, Jr. 38, dean of freshmen, said yesterday. "I'm for it, if it can be made practical."
