Harvard trackmen accounted for six first places to cop the unofficial team championship in the 43rd annual Knights of Columbus meet held Saturday at the Boston Garden. Crimson captain Dick Benka led an impressive sweep of the three afternoon field events, and the runners matched this with two individual wins and a relay victory. Junior Keith Colburn clipped more than a second from the University record in taking second place in the Cardinal Cushing 1000-yard run.
Benka heaved the shot 57' 2 1/2" for the winning medal as teammates Charlie Ajootian, Jake Driscoll, and Bruce Hedendal all bettered 50 feet for third, fourth, and fifth places. Ajootian led a similar sweep in the 35-pound weight, twirling the ball 59' 1/2". Ed Nosal, Driscoll, and Dave Bernstein followed with three of the four follow-up places. In the long jump, Skip Hare leaped 23'2" to top a field of New England collegians.
Big Burst
Sophomore John Gillis produced a strong finishing burst to hold off B.C.'s Mark Murray for the victory in the Eddie Farrell 500-yard run. Chunky Jon Enscoe hung back in second place for most of the collegiate mile race before unleashing a blistering kick with a lap and a half remaining for a ten-yard margin at the wire. An uneven pace accounted for the relatively slow time of 4:15.3 despite Enscoe's strong last quarter of 61.5 seconds.
Colburn faced a field which included two Olympians and two former IC4A champions in the 1000. He was content to stay behind over a fast first quarter, but gradually moved up to third with two laps to go. A sudden move over the last lap carried him past Bob Zieminski, but fell short of Herb Germann by less than a foot. Both were timed in 2:09.3, bettering the previous record of 2:10.4 held jointly by Colburn and the legendary George Burns '68.
Handsome Win
Yardlings Bud Wilson, Bob Seals, John Keating, and Jim Davis combined forces for a five-yard victory in the Freshman Mile Relay while the varsity foursome of Gillis, Tom Downer, Ben Lounsbury, and Ed Dugger were edged by Rutgers at the finish of their mile relay race.
