Attackman John Ince and midfielders Bruce Regan and Captain Tom Nicosia made impressive bids for post-season individual honors, as they ignited a smoothly coordinated Harvard varsity lacrosse team to a 11-5 trouncing of Dartmouth last Saturday at Soldiers Field.
Ince established a strong claim for All-American selection as he moved into a commanding lead in the Ivy League scoring race. His two goals and four assists topped all scorers for the game.
Close behind him in scoring against the Green were Regan, who had four goals and an assist, and Nicosia, who contributed a hat trick and one assist. Both presented a convincing case for their selection to this year's All-Ivy squad.
Harvard started early. Fifteen seconds into the game, Nicosia took a quick stick feed from attackman Jim Kilbreth, cut across the crease, and drilled a shot into the right hand corner of the Dartmouth goal. Later in the period, Ince successfully dodged around the Green defense to give the Crimson a 2-0 advantage.
But in the second quarter, Harvard went flat. Playing lazy ball for the rest of the half, the Crimson was outshot by the hard-running Green whose accurate long shots sent them ahead, 4-3.
Once again, it was Nicosia who started Harvard moving as he snared a pass from Ince on the opening face-off of the second half and broke down the middle of the field to score. After that it was all Harvard with the Crimson running the score to 9-4 by the end of the third period.
Standout defense by Pete Barber, Garry Leahey, and Bob McDowell shutout the Green for most of the last period. Dartmouth's final tally followed a momentary defensive lapse by McDowell, But Harvard retaliated with a perfectly executed "extra-man" play with Ince getting the goal.
