NCAA Might Change Baseball Playoff Date

The Harvard baseball team may be able to compete in the NCAA District I playoffs after all, but no one will be certain for a couple of days.

It seems that original reports that the tournament had been definitely scheduled for May 30-June 1--in the middle of the Harvard exam period--were inaccurate.

Adolph W. Samborski '25, director of athletics, said last night that the District Committee chairman Richard Thiebert, athletic director at Brown, said there was a "strong possibility that the dates of the playoff would avoid exams."

Samborski added that the Committee was using the May 30-June 1 date as a "talking point," but might reschedule the event because there is at least one other invited team in the same position as Harvard.

No Exams

If the date is changed, the tournament will probably take place June 4-6 at the University of Connecticut. No one on the Harvard team has an exam on the 4th, the last day of exam period.

A decision should be forthcoming by May 26, the announced date for the final selection of the competing teams.

The Administrative Board cleared the way for the District Committee's reconsideration when it voted yesterday to permit the team to participate if the tournament began on or after June 4. Dean Watson presented that proposal after speaking to Samborski, Thiebert, and Colby athletic director John Wilkin, another Committee member.

In an optimistic move, the Ad Board also voted to allow the team to continue to the NCAA final round if it should win the regionals. Harvard, the Eastern League champion, boasts a 16-7 record for the year.
