Undefeated Freshman Track Team Closes Season at Andover Today

Harvard's undefeated freshman track team should add the finishing touches to a record-breaking season today against Andover.

Since the Andies cannot offer much competition to the freshman team which overwhelmed Yale, 117-39, last week, the Yardlings will be primarily battling the record book.

Dave Pottetti, who shaved 20 full seconds off the freshman two-mile record with a blistering 9:05 clocking against Yale, will have his final chance of the season to break the varsity standard of 8:48.8, set by Doug Hardin last spring.

Coach Ed Stowell expects to use his versatile star, Walter Johnson, in four events: the high and low hurdles and the long and high jumps. Johnson captured all these events against Yale. His 23'9" effort in the long jump broke the previous freshman record of 23'6 1/2" set in 1961 by track great Chris Ohiri.

Although the Andover throwers will only be using eight-pound hammers, Stowell said that Ed Nosal will probably stick with the 12-pound hammer in a final attempt to smash the freshman record of 173'9". Nosal's best toss this year was 170'.

Stowell said last night he has no special plans for today's meet. "We should win quite easily. I will probably use everybody who makes the trip," he said.
