Mayor Walter Sullivan opened the three eastbound lanes of the Cambridge Street Underpass yesterday.
The westbound lanes are scheduled to open to traffic early next month.
The traffic facility, constructed by Harvard in cooperation with the city of Cambridge, cost $3.4 million.
When landscaping is completed in June on a pedestrian mall, students will be able to cross from the Yard to labs and classrooms across Cambridge Street without disturbing the flow of traffic.
The mall will span 385 feet and will be lanscaped with shrubs, trees, grass, and lighting fixtures. The tunnel below the mall extends for approximately 75 of the 1,500 feet of the new roadway.
The Underpass was constructed to eliminate congestion due to student pedestrians.
