Stickmen Facing Crucial Matches For Ivy Crown

Soldiers' Field will witness a sports extravaganza at 3 p.m. today.

The Crimson lacrosse team, fresh from an 8-5 win over Penn last Saturday, faces a Holy Cross squad that was swamped by M.I.T. 15-3. Harvard swamped M.I.T., 18-1, April 10.

Though the contest today shouldn't prove to be any rougher than an afternoon practice, the upcoming week will be the toughest and most crucial of the season for the laxmen. On Saturday the Big Red comes to town, headed by All-American goalie Butch Hilliard and a former Navy attack star, Dick Belfito.

While Cornell will be relying heavily on its two superstars, the Harvard squad boasts depth. Sophomore John Ince led the attack against Penn with four goals and two assists. Midfielder Jim Kilkowski leads in the scoring department with 11 goals, while Marty Cain and Jim Anderson have 10 and 9 scores each.

Undefeated

The Big Red boasts an undefeated record in league play, 4-0. But their only tough match was against Yale, and Penn also beat the Elis. Tom Nicosia said, "I think we'll beat Cornell."

One week from today the Crimson faces another Ivy power, the Bruins from Providence. That will be a tough match, but the toughest takes place April 27. Princeton, the favorite to take the Ivy title, will be here. Earlier this season the Tigers lost to Navy, a perennial national power, but only in the last three minutes of the game; and they tied Maryland, 6-6, which Nicosia described as "an amazing feat."

If Harvard can beat all three Cornell, Brown, and Princeton--the Ivy title will be a cinch, for the remaining games against Williams, Dartmouth, and Yale should pose no problem.

But now the laxmen are just looking ahead to Saturday. "The Cornell game is going to set the tone for the rest of the season," Ince said.
