Kaplan Selected As HUC President

The Harvard Undergraduate Council has elected Stephen H. Kaplan '69, chairman of the Leverett House Committee, as president for the coming year. Four candidates battled for the post in an election that lasted more than two hours.

The group also selected Jeffrey C. Alexander '69 of Lowell House as vice-president and James G. Miller '69 of Leverett House as secretary-treasurer.

"This year's HUC is realistic in that we realize we must shape up to win the university's respect," Kaplan said yesterday. One of his proposals called for the Faculty Committee on Houses to make public the Gill report which recommended charging a special fee to students who wish to live off-campus. The COH has kept the report confidential.

Alexander stated that the HUC is "ready for action" and as "angry as the most disaffected students." The HUC has always been afraid to say what's right. We hope to change that," Alexander said. He called for audits in non-academic fields, such as the success of coeducation.

Daniel B. Magraw Jr. '68, the outgoing HUC president, told the recently-elected members and officers that the group could become an effective student government only if students from all parts of the College participated actively in the HUC's programs.
