SPORTS of the 'CRIME'

As you may remember, in the first episode of the unfortunately continuing drama, the CRIMSON sports editor expressed certain reservations about his role as a prognosticator.

If his intution about football games had been as deep as his knowledge of himself, he would today be a very rich man. But, casting aside last week's mini-disaster, let us turn to this afternoon's Ivy League football slate.

My predecessor in this business generally absented himself during the pre-season, because he, like I, never knew what to expect from the outsiders like Holy Cross or Bucknell or Lafayette. Would that I had his foresight.

Princeton-Columbia

Today's games are half intra-Ivy battles, which makes my job somewhat easier. For example, Princeton plays Columbia. Both teams lost last week, but the Lions haven't stopped the Tigers since 1945 and, anyway, Princeton is now ready to mount its Ivy title race. Marty Domres will spend the afternoon on his backside and the Tigers will win handily, 24-0.

Dartmouth-Holy Cross

Last Saturday, Dartmouth displayed itself as a definite Ivy contender with a convincing win over New Hampshire. It's unlikely the Holy Cross Crusaders can get high enough, even on Homecoming Day, to avenge the opening loss to Harvard by stomping Bob Blackman's Big Green. 28-7 may be restrained.

Brown-Penn

In another Ivy bash, down in Providence, two surprise winners from last week will collide. Pennsylvania crushed Bucknell and Brown edged the University of Rhode Island. Both will be supercharged, but the Quakers have a little too much offense: Pennsylvania 18, Brown 9.

Yale-Colgate

Another advantage this week comes from the fact that most of the outsiders played an Ivy foe last week. So, one isn't completely in the dark trying to pick the Yale-Colgate game. Cornell licked the Raiders by 17-0 in Ithaca and the experts will be watching closely to see whether Brian Dowling & Co. can do as well. From here, it looks like Yale 23, Colgate 10.

Cornell-Rutgers

Two games remain. Cornell and Rutgers play in Ithaca and this should be about the best game in the country. Rutgers upset Princeton and promises to make a hard run at the Big Red. But most experts (and guessers) expect the Cornell defense to hold firm for a slender 9-6 decision.

Harvard-Bucknell

Finally, Harvard, Bucknell lost to Penn in its opener last Saturday. Harvard beat Holy Cross. If the Crimson offensive line can hold firm long enough for George Lalich and Pete Varney to connect on some passes, Harvard will win its second game. As my father's son, I pick Harvard, 17-15.
