Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
The Harvard fencers had one last chance to keep out of the Ivy cellar, but they blew it Saturday with a 17-10 loss at Yale.
Ron Winfield and Sam Fouts provided the brightest spots for the Harvard swordsmen. Winfield's two victories in the sabre proved enough to earn him a slot on the first all-Ivy team. Over the season the Crimson junior outdueled 11 of his 15 Ivy foes. Only two other sabremen tout better records.
In foil competition Fouts overwhelmed all three of his Yale opponents. Substitute Tom Mistick provided the only other foil win.
Bob Barnard and Winfield each won two and lost one in the sabre, while Bill Theodore and Paul Viita won a match apiece in the epee. Captain Harry Jergesen's two epee losses knocked him out of contention for all-Ivy.
Freshman Wrestlers Win
Harvard's freshman wrestlers closed out a successful season by overpowering Yale 23-8 yesterday at the IAB.
The 191-pound match proved to be the closest encounter of the afternoon, as John Imrie nipped Kirk Parker of Yale 3-2.
Imrie completed an undefeated season with a takedown and an escape to counter Parker's two escapes.
Two other unbeaten grapplers. Pat Coleman at 152 and heavyweight Tom Tripp, scored impressive wins. After Coleman flattened John Duncan 3-1, Tripp won on a decisive 11-1 victory over the Bulldog's sluggish Tom Kunkle.
Bart Harvey, 160, and Mark Faller, 167, contributed to the victory with decisions over their Yale counterparts. Mike Sutzker at 145 won by default. Tom Rainer, at 178, also won.
The squad ended the season with a 6-3 record, losing only to Brown, Rutgers, and a powerful Princeton team.
