Chalfie Is Named Tankers' Captain

Marty Chalfie, a junior 200-yard butterflyer who also swims in the medley relay, has been elected as next year's captain of the varsity swimming team.

Chalfie took an impressive eighth in the Eastern 200-yard butterfly this year and was tenth in the same event in his sophomore year.

"Marty will make an excellent captain because he has the admiration of the entire team," swimming coach Bill Brooks said. "He's a hard worker who has made a fantastic improvement in two varsity seasons. Next year should be the pinnacle of his swimming career." In his freshman year, Chalfie was undefeated in the 100-yard fly.

Chalfie was reluctant to talk about next year. "I think it should be a good year," the 5-10 junior said. "We have a chance of beating Dartmouth, Army, and Princeton--three teams that we lost to last year--but you can't say now."

The Varsity finished this season with a 6-4 record. Their other loss came at the hands of powerhouse Yale.

Asked about the chances against Yale, Chalfie said, "We always hope."
