Like the mythical phoenix, mixers have risen from their ashes.
The Faculty Committee on Houses has approved a Harvard Undergraduate Council recommendation to allow at least four girls' schools to attend mixers.
The new decision overturned a previous ruling that limited mixer invitations to Radcliffe plus one other girls' school. House committee chairmen then said that the restriction killed mixers.
Yesterday's HUC proposal also stated that:
* All unescorted girls must show college identification cards to be admitted.
* The only males who should be admitted are Harvard students and their guests.
* A full compliment of police and University officials should be present at every mixer.
* The HUC should assume supervision of mixers.
Dean Watson said he was pleased with the HUC plan but that the HUC would have to explain some "obscure" points more fully.
Stephen H. Kaplan '69, HUC president, said the new ruling was "an indication of the role students can play in the decision-making process." He said the Committee on Houses previously acted alone on the matter because of a breakdown in student-faculty communications.
