Freshman Team Outpaces Exeter; Vault Mark Set

The freshman track team, resuming its dual meet season after a three-week lay-off, received a mild scare yesterday at the hands of Phillips Academy.

The Yardlings beat a surprisingly strong Exeter team, 55-10. In their last previous outing, at Northeastern on January 16, the freshman romped, 80-29.

The highlight of yesterday's meet was John Derho's 13'6" pole vault, which obliterated a 34-year-old Harvard freshman record. The old mark was 13' 2 1/4".

Harvard's only double winner was Dave Pottetti, the terror of the freshman eross country team. Pottetti won both the mile and the two-mile, setting an Exeter cage record with 4:15.6 in the shorter distance.

Willowy Walter Johnson, the Yardling's utility man, added another first place in the broad jump with a 22'1" leap. He placed second in the high jump and high hurdles.

John Gillis and Ed Nosal accounted for the only other freshman firsts. Gillis raced through the 600 in 1:13.7 for his victory. Nosal lobbed the 12-pound shot 54'6 1/2" for the winning throw.

The freshmen join the varsity in the Greater Boston's at Northeastern this weekend.
