This year's Combined Charities Drive netted just over $22,000, slightly less than the $24,000 collected last year.
Cliffies are to blame, at least in part, for the decrease, William A. Shutzer '69 said yesterday. While contributions from Harvard successfully reversed the downward trend of the past four years, Radcliffe response was extremely disappointing.
According to Shutzer, Cliffies gave about $3200, between $1000 and $1200 less than last year.
Also contributing to the drop was the Lampoon's failure to match last year's gift of $2000.
Shutzer nevertheless called the drive a success. "We had different objectives than in the past," he said, "Participation was our goal. On this basis the drive was extremely successful."
Harvard freshmen made the drive's greatest contribution, collecting $14,000 over last year. "A person who gives in his freshman year tends to continue giving," Shutzer said. "The freshman class at Harvard did a really bang-up job."
Moving this year's drive from October to February may explain the drop in Radcliffe contributions, according to Lucy D. Freedman '70, drive chairman at Radcliffe. "Most girls probably get their money in a lump sum at the beginning of each year," Miss Freedman said; by February they are short of funds."
