Fencing Coach Edo Marion predicted yesterday that Harvard will win its first national championship in fencing next year.
The addition of two outstanding freshman fencers to the varsity next year should be the key to the first national championship of Marion's coaching career. The two are Larry Cetrulo in sabre and Tom Keller in foil.
Keller will be competing in the NCAA Fenching Championships this year in Detroit. "Though he is somewhat of a long shot now, he will be a definite threat next year," Marion said.
Next year's number-one varsity epee may also come from this year's freshman team. Geza Tatrallyay and Mark Irvings both show great promise in the specialty.
Marion confidently predicts a long-lasting Harvard predominance in fencing.
Wrestling
February has been a cruel month for the freshman wrestling team. Undefeated through its first five matches, the squad has lost three straight matches this month. A reportedly heavily recruited Princeton team was as tough as was expected, but the losses to Rutgers and Brown were unpleasant surprises.
Coach John Lee ascribes the team's faltering to weakness in the lower weights. "Overall, the boys are as good as my undefeated team two years ago," he said yesterday, "but, the lack of balance has put undue pressure on the heavier weights."
Standouts for the Yardlings are John Imrie at 191 lbs., captain Tom Tripp in the heavyweight class, and Pat Coleman at 152 lbs., who are all undefeated, though Tripp and Coleman have tied one apiece. In addition, Peter Wright and Tonv Rayner have shown promise for the future.
Meanwhile, the freshman prepare for Yale this Saturday in the IAB. Yale's freshmen are not particularly strong and besides, February will be over by then.
Squash
The freshman squash team closed out a highly successful season last Saturday, with a strong 8-1 win at Yale. Number one on the squad, Jaime Gonzalez, set the pace by winning in three straight, 15-10, 15-6, 15-6. The only real excitement was generated by number six, Dave Taylor, who was extended to a fifth game, before winning, 18-17. The freshman record stands at eleven wins and two losses.
The win came right on the heels of a victory over a strong Deerfield team and coach Corey Wynn said that he was very pleased with the team's progress during the season. "Very few of these boys had top level competition last year," he said yesterday, "but they've responded really well."
