A petition calling for the impeachment of President Johnson will be circulated around Harvard in the next eight weeks. Citizens for Governmental Restraint--the group that has drawn up the petition--will canvass 35 campuses across the nation.
A spokesman for the Minneapolis-based association said it hopes to indict the President for defrauding the public in the 1964 elections, and involving the United States in a war without the direct consent of Congress.
"The organization's current major project, the impeachment of Johnson, is a legal action," the spokesman said.
The group hopes to get one million signatures by the end of April. The petition would then be submitted to John W. McCormack (D-Mass.).
Ultimately, it is desired that a representative will introduce the petition on the floor, a prerequisite for legal action to be taken on it.
