Coach John Barnaby's invincible squash team capped another unblemished season with a 6-3 conquest of Yale on the Bulldogs' courts Saturday, giving Harvard its seventh consecutive League crown.
Anil Nayar led the onslaught by downing his rival 17-14, 15-8, 11-15, and 15-11. Sophomore Larry Terrell, Jose Gonzalez, and captain Rick Sterne polished off their opponents to complete another "fantastic four" sweep.
Yale then closed the gap by capturing the next three positions in closely-contested matches. Michel Scheinmann, John Whitbeck, and Fritz Hobbs all fell in five games.
Fernando Gonzalez and Pete Abrams both overpowered their opponents to provide the final margin of victory.
Fencing
Harvard's varsity swordsmen lost to Cornell, 15-12, last Saturday, but the match ended on a hopeful note for the Crimson's fencing future.
Rapidly improving sophomore Tony Abbott handily upset this year's leading contender for All-Ivy saber honors, Jim Latham, by a 2-5 score.
With Latham's loss, Harvard's Ron Winfield moves into contention for the All-Ivy saber spot.
Sophomore John Reitz upset Don Sieja --the Big Red's 1967 All-American in the epee and two-time All-Ivy selection--in a close 4-5 bout.
Harvard also dropped an 18-9 match to visiting Rutgers last week.
