Harvard Skier Wins Slalom Event In Annual Williams Ski Carnival

The 25th annual Williams Winter Carnival was cancelled Sunday afternoon because of inclement weather, but not before Willie Draper of Harvard captured the slalom title.

No final team scores were tallied since only three of the weekend's four scheduled events were completed. At the end of the first day, Harvard was bunched with three other teams a scant four points behind first-place Middlebury.

Draper's win was the first in college competition. An ecstatic Dick Friedman, Harvard's coach, described the feat as "Harvard's greatest skiing performance of the year."

Sophomore Steve Hinkle surprised everyone by placing third out of 40 entries in the 15-kilometer cross-country run. John Morton of Middlebury won the event easily, finishing more than four minutes ahead of the second place racer.

The only other Harvard skier to place among the top ten in any event was Peter Carter who finished fourth in the giant slalom. Carter also finished fourth in the slalom, but he was disqualified for missing a gate.

Next weekend, the Harvard ski team will travel to Middlebury to participate in the Eastern Collegiate Championships. This meet qualifies skiers for the NCAA Championships to be held in Colorado.
