The U.S. Government and the John F. Kennedy Library Corporation will today take title to the MBTA's Bennett Street train yards--the future site of the Kennedy Library.
The MBTA will receive $1,330,112 from the Library Corporation and $6,097,854 from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Great and General Court (state legislature) appropriated its contribution in 1965 as the Commonwealth's official memorial to the late President Kennedy.
Under the terms of the deed the MBTA will continue to use the Bennett yards rent-free until Jan. 1, 1970, when construction on the Library is scheduled to begin.
A long delay in finding another site for the Bennett transit facility could post-pone ground-breaking beyond that date. If this happens, a Library spokesman said last night, the MBTA will probably be given an extension on the use of Bennett.
The latest proposed site for the replacement facility--Mattapan Square--is presently being considered by the MBTA's five-man Board of Directors.
The plan for the new site--announced February 1 by MBTA General Manager Leo J. Cusick--will cost $12-million. Politicians in the area have raised strong objections to the plan.
