With smooth precision Harvard's powerhouse varsity fencing team rolled over a hapless Holy Cross squad, 27-3, on Saturday in the IAB. Once again the sabre squad led the rout, with Captain Ron Winfield and sophomore Larry Cetrulo and Pat Parkhurst all undefeated.
Tom Keller, the sophomore foil man who had some trouble in his varsity start last Thursday had no problems against the Crusaders. He wasted no time disposing of his two opponents, 5-1 and 5-0. He has regained the quick hand and long reach which he lacked against Southeastern Mass. Technological Institute.
"I practiced straight attacks without the complicated fakes I use against more skilled opponents." Keller said in explaining how he prepared for fencing against the weak Crusaders.
Coach Edo Marion let his superstars rest for at least one bout apiece. Parkhurst won two easy bouts and Mickey Irvings, one of last year's freshman stars, made his first varsity appearance, winning two close matches.
The graceful professionalism of the Crimson fencers was more evident than ever before on Saturday. Watching Cetrulo, Winfield, and Keller fence is a truly pleasing experience. They waste little motion in their clean and swift lunges and have none of the bouncing, jerky motions which characterize the less confident and less skilled fencers.
