8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
Harvard's JV hockey team will have its first test of the season today when it faces off against a strong B.C. freshman team at 5 p.m. at Boston College.
The Crimson won easily last Tuesday, scoring six goals in the first period against the Colby College freshmen and running away with an 11-5 victory. Jim Baldassari, Dick Delaney, and Andre Lemieux scored two goals each while Harvard's defense stymied the Colby offense until the last few minutes of the game when they allowed four quick goals.
But B.C.'s freshmen are always a formidable opponent and this year they have a particularly explosive squad. They trounced Yale, 7-3, in their opener Wednesday night, and B.C. fans are already starting to compare them with the outstanding freshman team of two years ago.
Big Players
The team's biggest player is left wing Tom Mellor from the Northwood School, who compares favorably to B.C. varsity star Tim Sheahy. Scott Godfrey, a high school All-Scholastic selection last year, and Tom Byrne fill out the Eagles' front line.
B.C. will alternate a strong corps of defensemen, including Charley Ahern and Jack Cronin, two other All-Scholastic picks last year. Its one weakness, however, is in the nets where John Smolens gives the team only adequate goaltending.
