Yardling Hoopsters Play B.C., Runners Face B.U.; JV Skaters Seek 2nd Victory Against Northeastern

Harvard's freshman basketball team goes after its first win today when it opposes Boston College at 6 p.m. at Chestnut Hill.

The Yardlings lost their opener to Springfield, 110-98, Saturday after trailing by only one point at halftime. Springfield then put on a second half spurt and drew out of Harvard's reach.

Harvard's offense was superb as five of the Yardlings were in double figures, but their man-to-man defense was unable to stop the Chief's deadly accuracy from the floor.

Matt Bozek led the freshmen with 26 points, followed by Bill Newkirk with 21 and Brian Newmark with 16. The Crimson was also strong off the boards, grabbing 54 rebounds.

B.C.'s freshmen have a 2-0 record with wins over Huntington Prep and the University of Connecticut freshmen. Although they have two standouts in Peter Schmid, a 6-7 center, and Dan Metzler, a 6-2 guard, they are not as strong as previous teams have been.

Hockey

Harvard's JV hockey team goes against the Northeastern freshmen today at 6:30 p.m. at Northeastern, with hopes of recovering from last Friday's 5-1 trouncing at the hands of the Boston College freshmen.

The Crimson held B.C. scoreless in the first period, but they could not stave off B.C.'s rushes in the second period and they allowed three goals.

After another B.C. score and half of the final period, Pete Haley spoiled B.C.'s shutout, but the freshmen retaliated with their fifth goal. It was the first JV loss to the Eagles in four years.

Northeastern has been challenging the JV's more strongly in recent years, Coach Jim Hutchinson said yesterday, although their freshmen should not prove to be as talented as B.C. was.

Track

Harvard's freshman track team opens its season against B.U. at 6 p.m. today at home, but it should be little more than a test for its meet with Army this Saturday.

The freshman sport a number of talented runners, and their depth, according to coach Bob Hunt, should improve as the season progresses and the injured trackmen return to action.

Hunt has most of this year's freshman cross country team, including Bobby Seals, Rick Jurgens, Phil Lichenstein, Mike Koerner, and Andy Meltzoff, for the distance events, but the standout so far has been Jim Davis, a half-miler who ran in the seventh and eighth positions for the cross country team this fall.

Davis, who ran a 1:55 half mile last year, has been the most impressive in his own particular event, Hunt said yesterday, and he should be a top-flight half-miler.
