SAN FRANCISCO--Striking students led by Black militants brought classes at San Francisco State College almost to a standstill yesterday, only a day after the college's reopening.
Several scuffles with the 50 helmeted police officers on campus occurred as approximately 200 of the college's 17,000 students disrupted classrooms throughout the day. A policeman fired two shorts in the air while rescuing a fellow officer being beaten by students.
At one point, about 75 to 100 strikers invaded classes in the Business and Social Sciences Hall, beating on garbage cans to drown out lecturers.
The college had been closed for a week after a series of similar disruptions during the strike called by the Black Students Union to enforce demands for re-instatement of a Black Panther leader on the faculty, a Black Studies Department, and increased hiring of Black faculty.
