Undefeated Frosh Soccer Opposes U. of Connecticut

An undefeated freshman soccer team plays the University of Connecticut this afternoon and coach Dana Getchell says he's worried. Front line injuries will weaken the Harvard attack against a strong defensive team.

It's the freshmen's fourth game in two weeks and the team is plagued with twisted ankles and bruises. Right wing Russ Bell pulled a groin muscle in Wednesday's match at Andover and will be out of today's tough game. Bell has been one of the team's top scorers.

In the backfield, Barnes Abbott is just getting over a knee injury. Goal keeper George Gibson is suffering from banged-up hips, and Larry Anderson may have to do most of the work.

The freshman are coming from an easy 6-1 victory over Andover. The prep team started out with a 1 goal lead but lost it in 15 seconds to the hard-hitting Crimson. Andover never recovered as Harvard rolled over them.

The Dartmouth game last Saturday was also a 6-1 landslide for the freshmen, with center forward Charlie Thomas driving home four goals.

Thomas leads the team in goals with 14 for six games. He may catch up to last year's top scorer Solomon Gomez, who netted 20 goals for the season.

"The season had gone exactly as I predicted until Andover," coach Getchell said, "but the horsing around is all done. This Connecticut team will go, go, go."

Getchell said he is pleased with his team's defense but still not satisfied with the attack. With Bell out the front line is handicapped. "That'll hurt plenty," Getchell said.
